Precinct Properties Commercial Bay Animation

Where: Auckland CBD, New Zealand
When: November 2015

When Precinct Properties reached out to us to create an animation that showcased its future development on Auckland’s waterfront, dubbed Commercial Bay, we saw an awesome opportunity to add to our Auckland 3d Model and produce another future vision of a significant part of the Auckland Long-term Plan.

The future development will be comprised of a 39-level office tower with a three-level retail precinct at its base. It will cover a city block and be the only single development to incorporate office space, a public transport hub, retail and hospitality spaces when it opens in 2018. The client calls it  “The missing tooth in Auckland’s smile”, and a significant part of the proposed City Rail Link.

Our mission was to create a two-minute 3d animation that communicated what the development entailed, what it meant for the public, and what opportunities it involved for businesses. Architecture firm Warren and Mahoney was still early in the design process, which meant we had some wriggle room when it came to the look of the building.

We used a few different techniques when to create backplates (the backdrop of the animation). Warren and Mahoney supplied some image content for us to incorporate, which we brought to life with people and other moving parts. Existing information from our Auckland 3d Model was included and we went out and photographed some key shots ourselves, too. We wanted to communicate the fast-paced, vibrant nature of Commercial Bay, so the people we subsequently animated move quickly, giving the presentation a time-lapse effect.

We worked closely with the architect on this one, and we were happy to contribute concept ideas for the design where it was necessary. The presentation was initially used on the client’s website, and subsequently in mainstream media over the last few months.
